Recycling On Hitchin Market

Markets have traditionally been green, serving goods in compostable brown paper bags and encouraging traditional shopping bags.

Hitchin Market is special. It’s almost 10 years since we installed a cardboard compactor, so that traders’ cardboard boxes are compressed, and a single collection can take away over two tons of cardboard for recycling.

Since 2011 we have shared the facility with Hitchin BID and many town centre retailers: at no cost to them.

Over the years we have sent over a thousand tons of cardboard for recycling.

Recently, The Tea Hut has served all its take-away tea and coffee in compostable cups.

Of course, the market on a Friday includes a large array of antique and collectable traders who by definition are recycling products.

Now, the market is offering the public used wood and plastic trays for reuse: they can be invaluable for greenhouses and horticulture, apple storage, DIY, whatever.

Just go towards the Biggin Lane car park and take what you want - no charge - they are clearly signed.
